Information for young women on pregnancy and maternity

Research by Equality and Human Rights Commission and Department for Business, Innovation and Skills found that young women were more likely to report negative and potentially discriminatory experiences than other women.

  • Six times as many young women reported being dismissed compared with the average.
  • One in five young women experienced some form of harassment related to their pregnancy, maternity leave, or their return to work.
  • A quarter of young women reported experiencing a negative impact on their health and stress levels.
  • Just under a third of young women felt their needs as a pregnant employee were not willingly supported by their employer.
