Women in the UK aged between 50 and 59 earn on average 20.5% less than their male counterparts, facing a gender pay gap significantly larger than the UK-wide gap of 14.2%, therefore it is clear that the impact of women’s labour market inequality is compounded over a working lifetime.

Happy Ada Lovelace Day!

Tuesday 14 October 2014 is Ada Lovelace Day, an international celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. Born in 1815 Ada Lovelace is thought to be the first computer programmer. The day aims to highlight the plethora of women in all areas of STEM and ensure there is a bank of visible role models to inspire girls and women interested in pursuing a career in science and technology.

Women and work: what next?

After months of campaigning, discussion and debate, what is arguably the biggest political event of a generation is almost upon us. With just over two weeks to go until the referendum, Close the Gap launched a new working paper Women and work: What comes next in a post-referendum Scotland?at a Constitutional Café event with Engender, Electoral Reform Society Scotland, and Scottish Women’s Aid on Saturday 30 August 2014.The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the implications for women and work in the context of the independence debate, to describe what needs to happen to effect positive change, and to identify the levers that are available in the event of either outcome.

Close the Gap Project – Development Officer – 34 hours(Fixed Term to 31 March 2016)

The STUC, the body that represents unions in Scotland, is seeking to recruit a Development Officer for Close the Gap, a partnership project with core funding from the Scottish Government. Close the Gap works with employers, economic development agencies, and trade unions to develop and implement strategies to close the pay gap between women and men.

Gender equality, the referendum and beyond: Constitutional Cafe

Close the Gap are joining forces with our friends at Engender to host a discussion event on women and the referendum. This ‘constitutional café’ will be held at the Scottish Youth Theatre in Glasgow, on 30 August from 10.30-12.30.

New online toolkit helps small businesses grow

Close the Gap are pleased to announce the launch of their pilot project, Think Business, Think Equality. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the project’s focus is on helping small and medium sized businesses across Scotland to grow, by realising the business benefits of delivering fairness and equality in the workplace.

The Wood Commission publishes final report on Developing Scotland's Young Workforce

This week saw the publication of the final report from the Wood Commission, Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce. The core message of the report is to better exploit the relationship between schools, colleges, business and industry to mitigate any mismatch between the supply and demand of skills, and deliver a system which supports young people to make better informed choices about their future.
