Equal Pay Day UK

Yesterday, Tuesday 2 November was Equal Pay Day. The Fawcett Society’s campaign aims to highlight the injustice of the gender pay gap. The headline UK average pay gap of 16.4% equates to women receiving their last pay check yesterday and working for free until the end of this year.

Currently in Scotland we have a full-time pay gap of 12.2% and when we compare women’s part-time hourly rate of pay with men’s full-time hourly rate of pay the gap is 32% (ONS, 2009).

Even after 40 years an undervalued workforce is still an unproductive workforce. Close the Gap are working to try and change this by supporting employers, individuals and trade unions to enable action on the pay gap.
